We are happy to announce a new addition to the MakerBus team. Safia has joined us as part of her College Boreal Professional Training Placement. During her placement Safia will be lending us her passion, organizational skills, and considerable artistic talents. Safia is an excellent cartoonist and has create a series of MakerBus cartoons that we will be sharing over the coming months.

Safia also speaks Arabic and will be helping us translate some of our most popular blog posts into Arabic. Makers come from every corner of the world and moving forward we’d like to include a wider variety of languages and perspectives on our blog.

Here is Safia’s introduction to our community:

When it comes to success, we are all driven by different factors. In my case it started in 1994 when I endeavored to start my university studies. Academic learning wasn’t enough and fad knowledge didn’t ever stop. So I started educating myself intensively in a regular and spare time. I learned quickly that many of the predisposed notions we carry about science were the very things holding me back. With every academic milestone I achieved, I found myself craving more. Consistently setting and achieving new goals kept my passions alive!

I like to think Computer Engineering as the best of both worlds that is Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. And it is really the best! The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Computer Science (CS) are both very tight knit, interesting, friendly, and awesome and I love that I get to be a part of both of them. As a Computer Engineer half of your major focuses are in ECE and the other half are in CS, so you really do get to spend half of your time in each.

In 1999, I graduated from the Technical University of Budapest – Hungary holding a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (Major Computer Eng.). I’ve been in Technical System Analysis & Support Services career for over than 8 years. Recently, I joined College Boreal in London, ON for three months to attend a Professional Training Course and then I was picked up for my first placement after only few weeks to work with DHMakerBus Team. It was completely a new domain for me as I was exploring new concepts of IT education!

Work is going really well and fun and I’m getting use out of my business minor as I’m participating in special workshops for children, I’m helping in demonstrating tech-facilities for juniors and assisting in empowering young children to use their skills in developing their imagination.

I think the best advice I could give to prospective CE majors would be to branch out and try other disciplines. It’s easy to get into one track or specialty but pursuing a well-rounded curriculum will serve you better after college. Try arts, or a foreign language, or take a class on the cardboard construction like I did, but most importantly, have fun.

عندما يتعلق الأمر بالنجاح، فاننا نتحرك طبقا لعوامل مختلفة. في حالتي أنا فقد بدأت في عام 1994 عندما كنت أسعى لبدء دراستي الجامعية. كان التعليم الأكاديمي وحده لا يكفي، ولأن المعرفة كانت بدعة لكنها لم تتوقف عن أي وقت مضى. لذلك بدأت بتثقيف نفسي جديا في وقت الدراسة المنتظم و في أوقات الفراغ أيضا. و لقد تعلمت بسرعة العديد من المفاهيم العلمية و التي نحملها داخلنا أنها ذاتها كانت الأشياء التي احتوتني. فمع كل معلم أكاديمي حققته، وجدت في نفسي حنين أكثر من ذلك . ولذلك وضعت لنفسي باستمرار حق الاحتفاظ بتحقيق أهداف جديدة والتي جعلت مشاعري على قيد الحياة! أحب أن أفكر بأسلوب هندسة الحاسوب باعتبارها أفضل العالمين وهو عالم الهندسة الكهربائية والأخر علوم الحاسوب. حقا أنه الأفضل! في الهندسة الكهربائية والحاسوب (ECE) وعلوم الحاسب الآلي (CS) كلاهما يعتبران متماسكة ضيقة جدا، ومثيرة للاهتمام، ودية، ورهيبة، وأنا أحب أن أكون جزءا من كل منهما. وبأعتبارك مهندس كمبيوتر فأن نصف تركيزك الرئيسي الخاص بك هو في الهندسة الكهربائية ، والنصف الآخر هو في علوم الحاسوب. لذلك كان حقا لازما أن تقضي نصف وقتك في كل منهما.

في عام 1999، تخرجت من الجامعة التقنية في بودابست – هنغاريا عقد على درجة البكالوريوس في الهندسة الكهربائية والمعلوماتية (تخصص هندسة كمبيوتر) و لقد عملت في مجال تحليل النظم والدعم الفني والخدمات المهنية للعملاء لأكثر من 8 سنوات. في الآونة الأخيرة، انضممت إلى كلية بوريال في لندن، أونتاريو لمدة ثلاثة أشهر لحضور دورة التدريب المهني و من ثم تم اختياري بعد بضعة أسابيع فقط للعمل مع فريق DHMakerBus. و قد كان هذا المجال جديدا كليا بالنسبة لي اذ كان علي استكشاف مفاهيم جديدة للتعليم التقني!

العمل مع هذا الفريق يسير بشكل جيد و مرح وقد تآلفت الخروج عن قاصر أعمالي المعتادة كمشاركتي في ورش عمل خاصة للأطفال، والمساعدة في توضيح التكنولوجيا للصغار وأيضا المساعدة في تمكين الأطفال الصغار لاستخدام مهاراتهم في تطوير خيالهم. أعتقد أن أفضل نصيحة يمكن أن أقدمها لمهندسين الكمبيوتر (الحاسوب) المستقبليين هي توسيع آفاقهم لمفاهيم جديدة و تخصصات أخرى. فإنه من السهل الوصول الى مسار أو تخصص واحد و لكن أن تنتهج منهجا جيدا مقربا فأنه سيخدمك بشكل أفضل بعد التخرج من الجامعة. حاول مثلا تعلم الفنون، أو لغة أجنبية، أو أخذ دروس خاصة في فن البناء من الورق المقوى كما فعلت أنا، ولكن الأهم من ذلك، هو أن تستمتع بوقتك و تحظى بقليل من المرح.
